Paul Ebusu, Executive Director of Uganda Cancer Society (UCS), shares civil society’s journey to becoming a key actor in improving access to cancer services in Uganda and to reducing the global cancer burden as one of the first countries to join the Treatment for All campaign.

Today, 16 finalists were announced following the call for nominations for the first UICC Awards to be conferred at a ceremony during the UICC General Assembly, on 2 October 2018, at the World Cancer Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Some of the leading causes of premature death in women in Sub-Saharan Africa include maternal and cancer-related deaths, with breast and cervical cancers being amongst the top. All these are amenable to surgical intervention and if treated appropriately, require some surgical input.

Liver cancer is now the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide claiming more than 800,000 lives each year. Yet, two out of three of those deaths are entirely preventable. Though the disease is often associated with excessive drinking and other lifestyle choices, it is in fact most commonly caused by hepatitis B, for which there’s a vaccine and treatment and by hepatitis C, which is curable.

As part of SPARC, a joint initiative between UICC and Pfizer that supports local projects addressing the specific needs of women living with metastatic breast cancer worldwide, each grantee is connected to a mentor to support their project. Sabrina Zucchello, Grant Manager at UICC, shares stories and examples highlighting the value of mentorship as a SPARC programme component.

On Thursday 5th July, the President of the UN General Assembly brought together different stakeholders to share practical examples of their work and to make recommendations which support a bold High-level Meeting (HLM) Political Declaration to help drive action forwards on cancer and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Adela Ayensa, General Director of Salvati, Mexico, one of the first organisations to commit to Treatment for All, an inspiring and ambitious advocacy campaign led by UICC, shares the steps Mexico has taken to bring together civil society to advocate for better access to cancer treatment and care.

5 July 2018 – New York, USA: Today, UICC announced that the city of Tbilisi, Georgia has been selected to join the C/Can 2025: City Cancer Challenge (C/Can 2025) initiative as a Challenge City. Tbilisi will become part of a collective movement of cities supported by a network of global and local partners to deliver quality, equitable and sustainable cancer treatment solutions.
