2018 World Cancer Leaders' Summit in full swing

Global health leaders from across UN Agencies, the non-profit and private sectors, and academia issued an urgent call to countries to increase access to, and investment in, cancer services to improve vital early detection, treatment, care, and public health data. The need for national action on cancer is more urgent than ever. New data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates that there will be 18.1 million new cancer cases diagnosed and 9.6 million cancer deaths in 2018.

Officially announced at the 2018 World Cancer Leaders' Summit, the 2018 call for applications will focus on engagement within Asia, inviting cities across the region with a population of over one million to join the initiative. Since the launch of the City Cancer Challenge in 2017, the first four Key Learning Cities have been mobilising the initiative’s network of global and local partners to develop and implement localised action plans, tailored to the needs of each city.

Senior representatives of government, academia and industry met to discuss the progress made since April, noting in particular the significance of the Japanese government having included specific reference to cancer in its revised basic policy on the Asia Health and Wellbeing Initiative, which was adopted in July 2018. The meeting provided an opportunity for all stakeholders to discuss ways forward for improving access to cancer care, with the WHO Cancer Report and other global initiatives in mind.
