Released: TNM e-learning modules

On the occasion of the 2014 World Cancer Congress (WCC), eCancer and the UICC TNM Project are pleased to unveil the first series of TNM e-learning modules.

Header Paragraph

eCancer and UICC have collaborated to produce a set of 7 modules on TNM staging for the purpose of educating and informing the global cancer community on the globally accepted classification of malignant tumours. The modules are to be used as a teaching aid and essential toolkit for those working in cancer staging.

The following modules were unveiled at the 2014 WCC and are available for download:

Each module takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes a voice-over and interactive quiz.

By the end of each module, users should:

  • know the general principles of the UICC TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours,
  • understand the structure of the UICC TNM Classification 7th edition and
  • be able to apply the UICC TNM Classification to different cancer sites.

Stay tuned in 2015! Modules 3-7 (on cervical, prostate colorectal, oral and lung cancers) will be released in 2015.

Investing in prevention measures and ensuring that they are included in universal health coverage (UHC) schemes is a cost-efficient and effective way to save lives and reduce the cost of cancer to public health systems. An upcoming UN high-level meeting provides an opportunity to prioritise cancer control as an essential part of achieving UHC.

The reference to cancer stages (I, II, III and IV) in a cancer diagnosis comes from the international  TNM (“Tumour”, “Nodes”, “Metastases”) classification system, which describes how advanced a cancer is. It has been maintained by UICC for the past 70 years, and every year the Core Committee meets to discuss updates to the system.
