World leaders call for concerted efforts to halt the spiralling global cancer epidemic

'Effective International Collaboration'

Header Paragraph

18 November 2015 – Istanbul, Tukey: Today 250 leaders from government, UN agencies, academia, private sector and civil society are meeting at the 2015 World Cancer Leaders’ Summit (WCLS), organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in Istanbul. Discussed will be the urgent strategies and actions needed to reduce premature deaths from cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by a third within the next 15 years (United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.4).

Currently over eight million people die from cancer worldwide annually, four million prematurely (i.e. of working age - 30 to 69 years); numbers that are rising year on year. Addressing this impact now is critical to supporting global sustainable development, as disparities in access to prevention, treatment and palliative care for cancer patients are growing exponentially between the developed and developing world.

“The inclusion of an NCD reduction target in the United Nations’ new Sustainable Development Goals opens a new era of international development that the cancer and broader health communities have a unique opportunity to grasp. We urgently need to build new alliances, develop ground-breaking partnerships and overcome the barriers to optimal international collaboration,” commented Professor Tezer Kutluk, President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). “As the only leadership forum dedicated exclusively to cancer control, the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit plays a crucial role in delivering the changes required to address the devastating impact of cancer now, and for future generations.”

The 2015 Summit is focused specifically on the importance of collaboration across country borders, across diseases and through public and private partnerships. The programme highlights successful examples of national cancer control planning and cross-diseases interventions, as well as issues related to the management of conflict of interest, data sharing and international policy development.

High profile guest speakers include Dr Sania Nishtar, Founder and President of Heartfile, former Federal Minister of Health for Pakistan, Mr Gary Cohen, Executive Vice President, Global Health & Development, Becton, Dickinson & Co and Mr Michael Hübel from the EU Commission, Health and Food Safety Directorate General.

About the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit (WCLS)

First organised in 2008, the WCLS, organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), brings together key decision makers from around the world and encourages timely debate on emerging global issues related to cancer. It provides an important forum to secure a coordinated, multileveled global response to address the spiralling impact of cancer.

Key objectives of the Summit include:

  • Raising awareness among leading decision makers to ensure cancer is a global health priority.
  • Providing a forum to exchange information and innovative ideas on how to reverse the cancer epidemic and ensure a sustainable response.
  • Defining compelling messages to support the global call to action against cancer.
  • Creating a force which galvanises politicians and policy makers and increases cancer’s visibility on the international public health agenda.

The WCLS partners include: the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization.

About the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC)

UICC unites the cancer community to reduce the global cancer burden, to promote greater equity, and to integrate cancer control into the world health and development agenda. UICC is the largest cancer-fighting organisation of its kind, with over 900 member organisations across 155 countries representing the world's major cancer societies, ministries of health, research institutes, treatment centres and patient groups.

UICC is dedicated to continuing to work with world leaders to increase their support for cancer control measures, and encourage accountability for the cancer commitments made in the UN Political Declaration on NCDs. UICC uses key convening opportunities like the World Cancer Leaders' Summit, World Cancer Congress and World Cancer Day for continued focus on:

  • Developing specific time-bound targets and indicators to measure the national implementation of policies and approaches to prevent and control cancer
  • Raising the priority accorded to cancer in the global health and development agenda
  • Promoting a global response to cancer

UICC and its multisectoral partners are committed to encouraging governments to look towards the implementation and scale-up of quality and sustainable programmes that address the global burden of cancer and other NCDs. UICC is also a founding member of the NCD Alliance, a global civil society network that now represents almost 2,000 organisations in 170 countries.
