UICC and its partners, the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hosted collaborative workshops for nurses and midwives on cervical cancer prevention and screening in San Salvador, El Salvador on September 14, 2015 and Lima, Peru on September 18, 2015.

The workshops were a great success with more than 40 nurses participanting in the Central American workshop from Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama and 30 nurses and midwives participating in the South America workshop from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay and Peru.

The workshops are a key component of the CERCA project, supported by UICC and CDC which aims to improve the capacity of nurses and community health workers in the Latin American region working at the primary health care level through the development and implementation of ‘train-the-trainer’ workshops. Workshop topics included a review of Prevention and Control Programmes, Community Mobilisation, Education and Counselling, HPV Vaccination, Screening and Treatment of Cervical Pre-cancer, Diagnosis and Treatment of Invasive Cervical Cancer, and Palliative Care.

Workshop modules were developed by ISNCC and partners and were led by expert nurse educators from the region, Luz Esperanza Ayala de Calvo (Colombia),  Myrna McLaughlin de Anderson (Panama), Victoria Brunelli (Argentina) and Marise Dutra Souto (Brazil).
