Technical Fellowships

Transfer of cancer control knowledge, skills and techniques through one month international visits

Objectives

  • Facilitate the international exchange and development of technical knowledge and skills in all areas of cancer control
  • Build capacity of the individual and the home organisation through the effective application and dissemination of the newly acquired skills in the home organisation upon return
  • Support the development of networks of cancer control professionals for the continued sharing of best practices and knowledge, and the informal provision of ongoing support, guidance or training

Fellowships in cancer prevention and early detection

In 2023, UICC opened a specific call for Technical Fellowship and Bourse pour l'Afrique francophone applications on cancer prevention and early detection in low and middle-income countries.

The call was open between June 15 to August 15.

Newly awarded Fellows

Eligible candidates

Cancer professionals resident in low and middle-income countries working in cancer prevention or early detection such as public health investigators, implementation and translational researchers, pathologists, epidemiologists, tobacco control activists and cancer registrars in the early stages of their careers who hold at least an MSc or MA.

Clinicians and nurses who are established in oncology practice and hold as a minimum an MD degree (for doctors) or RN (for nurses).

Medical and PhD Students are not eligible to apply.

Practical Information

Call dates: Call closed August 15, 2023

Duration: Flexible durations of two weeks to two months

Extension: Up to two months, with no further funding available from UICC

Duration of Technical fellowship - Maximum level of funding possible

  • Two weeks - 2,200 USD
  • Three weeks - 2,800 USD
  • Four weeks - 3,400 USD
  • Five weeks - 4,000 USD
  • Six weeks - 4,600 USD
  • Seven weeks - 5,200 USD
  • Eight weeks - 5,800 USD

Notification of results: October 2023

Host Institutions

Ideally, Technical Fellowship candidates identify and make contact with potential host supervisors themselves. Host institutions do not need to be UICC member organisations, however, in cases where candidates are unable to find a host supervisor, UICC can liaise with UICC members such as Princess Margaret Cancer Center (Canada), Hospital Moinhos de Vento (Brazil),  HCG Hospitals (India), NCCK (S.Korea) and Icon Group   who have expressed an interest in hosting UICC Fellows.

Established in 1962, the Fellowships is one of UICC's oldest and most established portfolio of programmes.

Virtual Fellowships allow cancer professionals from UICC member organisations to obtain expert learning and guidance in cancer control in English, French or Spanish, through a series of four one-to-one video calls with experts.

Fellows who have successfully completed a fellowship are invited to join the Association of UICC Fellows.

UICC regularly reviews its capacity building programmes to ensure UICC programmes are not only contemporary but also targeted to meet the emerging needs of cancer control organisations and contribute to the development of cancer control at a country level.
