Header Paragraph

As you may know global surgery is a key issue for strengthening health systems and achieving universal health coverage. As part of this effort, a global team has been tasked by the Lancet Oncology to produce a report on the state and future needs of cancer surgery across all income settings. This commission is seeking your input.  A summary of the commission can be found below, and the link will take you to the full details.

How can you Help?

We invite you to review the Commission and we make submissions on the subject of cancer surgery, particularly as they relate to needs and experiences of patients in your country. Input is also welcome on the role of civil society in driving the agenda forward in global cancer surgery.

Any direction and input to the Commission will of course be publicly acknowledged.

With thanks for your time and consideration, and best wishes,

Richard Sullivan, Chair, Lancet Oncology Commission on Global Cancer Surgery & UICC Board Member

Surgery News from World Health Assembly 2015

At this year's World Health Assembly, held from 18-26 May in Geneva, Switzerland, Member States unanimously adopted a resolution on "Strengthening emergency and essential surgical care and anaesthesia as a component of universal health coverage".  Recognising the critical importance of surgical services for tacking cancer and other non-communicable diseases, and the huge gaps in global access to essential surgery, the Resolution underlines the importance of building political commitment to expand access, and of strengthening the surgical workforce through training and knowledge-exchange.

The Resolution also emphasizes the need for development of a robust framework for monitoring and evaluation of surgical capacity, and regular reporting of access to and safety of surgery.  UICC contributed to Member State discussions on the Resolution with a statement recalling that 6 billion people globally are still unable to access basic cancer surgery - this despite the fact that over 71% of cancer patients will need a surgical procedure at some point in their treatment.
