3rd European Roundtable Meeting on Quality of Cancer Care in Berlin

15 June 2016– The German Cancer Society (DKG) and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) organised the third European Round Table Meeting on Quality of Cancer Care, entitled Current developments in cancer care: including the patient perspective”.

Header Paragraph

The meeting took place in DKG Headquarters, in Berlin on 17 June 2016, targets experts concerned with improving the quality of cancer care in the different national health systems of the European Member States.

In the previous European Roundtable Meetings (ERTM) (see reports of the first and second editions), the participants discussed the benefits of institutional structures that are necessary for the improvement of cancer care and how theoretical health care standards and knowledge can be transformed into a practical approach. They concluded that besides the development of National Cancer Control Plans (NCCPs), including quality control in the work of cancer registries is fundamental. Practical implementation processes were considered to be most important but also the most complex to adjust. An organisational network which provides pathways from diagnosis to treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care was also judged to be crucial. However, depending on the structure of national healthcare systems these networks may differ. Another common problem, which was identified is the challenge in establishing multidisciplinary multi-professional cooperation.

Thinking about patient perspectives, analytical approaches need to be turned upside down. Instead of asking, what will be the next product along our existing funnels for our patient-customer who will have to adjust to this “health market”, the question should be what is necessary to adjust our “product line” health system to increase the ability to tailor cut health care to the patient needs. Instead of streamlining the patient or the health system in favor of one of the market players it should be adjusting and potentially diversifying the market in favor of the patient.

By organising a roundtable meeting, the German Cancer Society and UICC would like to encourage the exchange of information on these questions, share best practices, and learn more about beneficial institutional health structures in Europe.
